Quieter nights

How It Works.

Soothing sound that softens the night, calms the day, and helps residents rest.

The night is louder than residents need it to be. Footsteps in the corridor, doors closing and passing voices break sleep, hour after hour. Sound Cocoon lets the Nobi Light play a gentle, steady sound, so those disruptions are less likely to wake the resident. Nothing is added to the room. The light is already there.

A Cocoon of Soothing Sound.

A steady sound raises the room's noise floor just enough that a closing door or footsteps in the corridor no longer break through.

Chart of one night, with and without Sound Cocoon. Without Sound Cocoon, four noises (a closing door, footsteps, voices and a cart) rise above the quiet background of the room. Three of them rise far enough above it to cross the wake threshold, and the resident is woken up three times. With Sound Cocoon, the same four noises are just as loud, but the steady sound raises the room's noise floor. The wake threshold sits the same distance above the background, so it rises too. None of the noises rise far enough above the raised background to cross it, and the resident keeps sleeping.

When

A wind-down before bedtime, or only once the resident is in bed.

How long

Minutes, hours, or the full night.

Sound type

White, pink or brown noise, to suit the room and the resident.

Volume

Just above the room's own level: enough to mask, soft enough to disappear.

Residents are calmer through the day. One resident who shouted constantly stopped doing so once we introduced the masking sound.

Residents at De Wimpel sleep noticeably better since the night staff moved to a person-centered approach instead of fixed rounds, with the masking sound from the Nobi light supporting it. Staff see residents more awake during the day, and the data shows far fewer bed exits than before the summer.
